A Conversation Entitled on parenting
- him: i was thinking about you a few days ago. in one of my classes we were talking about family strucutre and how kids refere to their parents. it reminded me that your kids will call you boss. lol
- me: hahahaha! you can't steal that idea!
- him: i kept it to myself. i think that one is copy written.
- me: absolutely. what does how kids reference their parents do to or say about their experience (childhood)? for the record, my kids would be awesome, no matter what the research says.
- him: we were talking about it in the context of non-traditional families and the difficulties they encounter that standard biological families do not.
- him: lol! i agree.
- him: for example how does a kid refer to his parent live in boyfriend or girlfriend. or what do you call your moms new husband. just those difficulties that arrise when traditional titles aren't appropriate, and the difficulty of finding a fair name or title can cause trouble.
- me: i always thought that if my mother brought home a dude i didn't care for [when i was younger], i'd call him sir. 'sir, could you pass the eggs?' 'sir, would you please hand me the remote?'
- him: yeah, but sir seems odd after living with someone for 6 months. i'm thinking about cohabiting families.
- me: that's the point. that's the dig. it'd be a clear message about how i felt. he'd know he needed to kick rocks.
- him: LOL

the verge’s paul miller wrote today about researchers at virginia tech who are working on improving locomotion in humanoid robots. it reminded me of a popsci article i read last year, written by jacob ward, about why american researchers seem to be behind their international counterparts in developing humanoid robots. interesting stuff.

i really like the verge, a new tech site developed by joshua topolsky and friends. my one complain is the home page is a bit too busy for my taste, but i enjoy the content and the forums. i really liked this article written by joseph flatley about homes built in missile bunkers. after looking around for a while, i find i enjoy that type of content, content that isn’t explicitly technology related, but appeals to my nerd sensibilities (there’s another good one written by thomas ricker about jetpacks). i think i’m a bit burned out on technology, and the verge’s front page is a good summation of why. there’s so much to take in at any given point. i enjoy that interesting things are being created and released all the time, but many of them are in the same class of devices or are iterations of what came before. i haven’t really gotten excited about anything i’ve read about recently (full disclosure: i had a brief crush on siri). but i’m drawn to innovation and enjoy state of the field technologies, so i keep going back. fortunately, the verge makes it easy to justify doing so by presenting well-written, visually satisfying articles that go beyond phones and specs.
